Summary

Min Ji Kim et al. investigated the use of polycaprolactone (PCL) mesh in reconstructing bilateral orbital floor fractures in two Le Fort II fracture cases. They employed AVIEW software for precise volumetric analysis before and after surgery to evaluate outcomes. Using 3D-printed Husteon PCL mesh, they restored orbital symmetry with significant reductions in pre- to post-operative orbital volume differences (3.2 cc to 1.1 cc and 1.18 cc to 0.4 cc). PCL's biocompatibility, biodegradability, and flexibility allowed it to mold to complex orbital defects while promoting tissue integration. Despite challenges such as radiolucency on CT scans, AVIEW facilitated accurate assessment. This study challenges the skepticism about PCL's mechanical robustness in severe cases, demonstrating its potential as a biodegradable alternative for craniofacial reconstruction. Limitations include a small sample size and lack of long-term data. Further studies are necessary to validate its broader applicability and durability in complex injuries.
