Early detection of lung cancer using chest CT has been widely proven to objectively increase cure rates in several international trials. The international focus is now on effective and affordable implementation. It is increasingly recognized that chest CT screening is also detecting a range of early tobacco-related diseases, including lung cancer, cardiovascular disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. These three diseases make up the “BIG3” because they account for nearly half of all premature deaths worldwide. Chest CT screening offers a unique opportunity to integrate care for this high-risk population with a single imaging test.
