Italy at the Threshold of a National Program
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death in Italy, with over 41,500 new cases and 33,800 deaths reported in 2018. Five-year survival is only about 16%.
While Italy does not yet have an official national lung cancer screening program, the RISP (Italian Lung Screening Network) is rapidly expanding as a large-scale pilot.
Launched in 2021, RISP involves 18 hospitals across the country, enrolling 10,000 high-risk individuals for free LDCT (low-dose CT) screening. More than 8,000 participants have already undergone baseline scans. Cost-effectiveness studies have confirmed the value of LDCT, paving the way for possible nationwide adoption.
